Bellbird Bone Builders

What is Bellbird Bone Builders?

  • Strength, impact & balance training for people with osteopenia/osteoporosis or looking to improve bone health

What is osteoporosis and osteopenia?

  • Osteoporosis weakens bones making them more likely to break.
  • It is considered a silent condition in that weakening of the bones is not felt until a bone breaks.
  • Bones are living tissue that our cells continually reabsorb and replace. In osteoporosis the bone reabsorption occurs faster than our body replaces the bone. This results in less dense bone that is more prone to break.
  • Osteoporotic fractures are common in the spine, wrist and hips.
  • Osteopenia is a milder form of osteoporosis that can be seen as a warning of developing osteoporosis.

Fisk factors for Osteoporosis

The risk of osteoporosis increases with:

  • Years past your mid 30s
  • Being a woman, particularly asian and white women
  • Being post-menopausal
  • Low calcium intake
  • Low vitamin D intake
  • Having a small body frame (being small or thin)
  • Having a family history of osteoporosis
  • A sedentary lifestyle or long periods of bed rest
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Heavy alcohol consumption (more than two drinks a day)
  • Hormone imbalances. Particularly low estrogen in women and low testosterone in men
  • Medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and eating disorders (like anorexia nervosa)
  • Some medications such as oral corticosteroids

How can Bellbird Bone Builders help?

  • A physiotherapist knowledgeable in exercises that stress your bones in a controlled way runs sessions that are tailored to each participant. The controlled stress stimulates your body to lay down more bone competing with your body’s natural tendency to reabsorb bone.
  • Research shows that a combination of strength, impact and balance training is effective in improving bone density and reducing chance of fractures.
