Pre-natal & Post-natal Physiotherapy & Clinical Pilates
What are the benefits of Clinical Pilates both pre-natal and post-natal?
What will Clinical Pilates exercises involve?
What can I expect from my physiotherapist?
In 2017 Bellbird Sports & Spinal will be commencing pre-natal and post-natal Clinical Pilates classes. As with the current Clinical Pilates classes offered at Bellbird Sports & Spinal, all pre-natal and post-natal Clinical Pilates classes will be run by a qualified physiotherapist with knowledge in appropriate exercises for both the pregnant woman, and the new mother.
In conjunction with the patient the physiotherapist will design a program which is consistent with the patient’s goals and which addresses any current or potential musculoskeletal conditions which they are currently experiencing and/or would like to avoid developing.
Clinical Pilates can be used successfully to manage:
· Pelvic pain including sacroiliac joint pain
· Lower back pain
· Upper and middle back pain
Clinical Pilates can be used to facilitate pelvic floor muscle strengthening to prepare the body for the birth of the baby.
Clinical Pilates can be used post-natal to:
· Treat abdominal separation
· Strengthen abdominal muscles post caesarean section
· Rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles
· Assist in managing urinary incontinence by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles
In addition to the above mentioned benefits, strengthening the arm muscles and leg muscles with Clinical Pilates exercises will prepare the expectant mother for the daily tasks of caring for their growing newborn. There will be a particular focus on good technique by creating exercises that replicate activities such as carrying the newborn and growing baby, and transferring the newborn from the crib, car seat or floor during floor play.
The pre-natal and post-natal Clinical Pilates classes will also involve particular attention to posture. Postural exercises can be used to manage lower back pain and upper to middle back pain as a result of the physical changes the mother’s body will undergo during pregnancy. Postural exercises can also be used to manage neck and back symptoms from breast feeding or bottle feeding, and pain as a result of the new daily physical demands that caring for a newborn baby will present.
In conjunction with Clinical Pilates, Bellbird Sports & Spinal is happy to offer physiotherapy (insert hyperlink) and myotherapy (insert hyperlink) which can be used to provide relief from sore joints and sore muscles. Symptom relief through these two manual therapy approaches will enable you to better perform your exercises in the Clinical Pilates class.
